Chichen Itza is a pre-Columbian Mayan city located on the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula. It had its best times between the 10th and 11th centuries AD. After this time, the town gradually lost its importance until it was completely abandoned in the 15th century. To date, it is not known why. The city, ruined and overgrown with vegetation, was rediscovered by Edward Herbert Thompson at the end of the 19th century. Thousands of years have passed since the establishment of the center, the buildings still remind of the former power of its inhabitants. The Maya erected huge stone structures in the city that delight and attract thousands of tourists every year.
The next stop of our trip will be Cenote Ik Kil with crystal water. It is a breathtaking karst well where we will bathe. Then we will have a buffet dinner at a local restaurant.
On the way back we will stop for a walk in the charming colonial town of Valladolid. If time permits, we will also visit a tequila distillery.
